Neuro- psychological Testing

What is Neuropsychological Evaluation?

Neuropsychological evaluation will include a personalized testing plan to assess a variety of cognitive functions. These test batteries are customized to meet unique needs and address specific referral questions. Some of the cognitive skills and processes which may be investigated include:

  • Attention
  • Problem-solving
  • Memory (To learn more about memory care in Texas, please click here.)
  • Motor skills
  • Processing speed
  • Language abilities
  • Verbal and non-verbal reasoning
  • Executive functioning (ability to manage self and skills to achieve goals)
  • Sensory functioning (ability to manage signals taken in through the senses and respond appropriately)
  • Emotional functioning (ability to manage emotive responses like fear, sadness, and excitement)

At the end of the assessment, our team will offer patients a complete picture of their cognitive strengths and weaknesses. Additionally, the DFW Assessment team will provide patients recommendations for continued support and treatment to make the most of their strengths in order to allow patients to meet any challenges in personal, professional, or educational settings head on.

Who Should Receiving Neuropsychological Evaluation?

We may recommend neuropsychological evaluation for adults or children for a number of reasons. Though we will be assessing the brain’s functioning, these evaluations are completely noninvasive. Neuropsychological evaluations are commonly undergone by those who have experienced a traumatic brain injury (TBI), seizure disorders, tumors, and medical or emotional conditions that may affect cognitive processes. These evaluations may help a medical doctor, psychologist, therapist, or other clinician better understand how a problem that begins in the brain is affecting your ability to perform daily tasks.

What Kind of Testing is Involved?

Every patient at DFW Assessment is given a unique set of tests, so no two neuropsychological assessments will be exactly the same. These tests are specifically designed to find the limits of a patient’s cognitive abilities. For this reason, patients often find neuropsychological testing to be very frustrating. However, it’s essential for us to push patients’ abilities, so we have a true picture of their strengths. Neuropsychological evaluation may include a battery of test questions and performance tasks to help us judge your skill and thought processes. We may administer tests using traditional pen and paper assessment in addition to the latest computerized testing tools. We may administer tests that assess function in the following areas:

  • Intelligence and/or cognition
  • Academic ability
  • Verbal and visual learning and memory
  • Language processing
  • Visual-spatial processing
  • Attention and concentration
  • Executive functioning (planning, organization, inhibition, flexibility)
  • Sensory functioning (understanding and responding to signals from our senses)
  • Emotional functioning (controlling and properly responding to emotions)
  • Processing speed
  • Personality
  • Social skills

At the end of your evaluation, we will offer our assessment of your neuropsychological strengths and weaknesses as well as practical recommendations to help you maximize your areas of skill. If you have questions or need our help in addressing areas of challenge, we will be happy to help. Please don’t hesitate to call the DFW Assessment team.
